Women's Bedford Cup

The Bedford Cup was created to feature the top collegiate women's tennis players from all NCAA Division I tennis programs in the state of the Florida. The Youth Tennis Foundation (YTF) of Florida sponsors and runs the event with funds donated by the Edward T. Bedford Foundation. All the teams have to do is get to the event. YTF takes care of all lodging, food and tournament needs for the players. Seven of Florida's D I Women's teams competed in the inaugural tournament in 2012.

2023 Bedford Cup Women's Event

The 2023 Women's Bedford Cup event held at USF the weekend of Sept. 29-Oct 1. Christina Moros, coach of the varsity team, was the tournament director. This event began in 2012 and has been held continuously ever since, except for the Covid year. Every D-I school except Miami and Bethune-Cookman attended.

Florida State freshmen Laura Putz and Maelie Monfils won the Women's Open doubles at the Bedford Cup in Tampa. The pair kicked off their first colligate match with a 6-2 win over Grace Schumacher and Ireland Simme of the University of South Florida in the east draw quarterfinals. Putz and Monfils went on to win 6-4 over Carla Galmiche and Amber McGinnis of FAU in the semifinal round and ended the tournament with a 6-4 victory over Anslee Long and Annabelle Davis of UNF to secure the Bedford Cup. The tournament's Sportsmanship Award was awarded to sophomore Cade Criccho.

Kendall Nash won the singles white draw title, Annabelle Davis earned a runner-up finish in the singles gold draw and the Ospreys closed out the Bedford Cup with 24 victories. Annabelle Davis nearly completed a perfect opening weekend in singles, falling just short in the third frame during the gold draw finals. Kaplan closed out her first weekend in the Navy and Gray with a green draw west finals appearance. Kendall Nash won the white draw with a three-set win against Amelia Kopel of FGCU, giving her a 4-0 weekend to start the fall.

Alisa Lyshko added another win by defeating Maya Shanok, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5.

2022 Bedford Cup Women's Event

On September 25, 2022, the all-Florida division I Women's Bedford Cup wrapped up a beautiful weekend of tennis on the campus of FGCU in Ft Myers, Florida. There was plenty of play over the 3 day event event, including full A and B draws with consolation, both singles and doubles, with participation from 7 Florida universities - UF, USF, FAU, FGCU, STETSON, UNF and FIU. For the 10th consecutive year, the YTF was proud to sponsor the tournament, in partnership with the Bedford Foundation.

Ed Jagger, President of the YTF, and Ron Fick, Trustee of the Bedford Foundation, were on hand to kick off the tournament and express appreciation to all the coaches, players, and all others involved who make this tournament a featured event on the fall calendar.

In the main draw championship match, Emma Shelton from the University of Florida defeated Jordana Ossa of Florida Gulf Coast University.

In the main draw doubls championship match, the University of North Florida defeated Florida International University.

2021 Bedford Cup Women's Event - October 1-3, 2021

Following a year's absence due to COVID-19, The Women's Division I Bedford Cup was held October 1-3, 2021 at the University of South Florida with full draws, great weather and a fun weekend. Compass draws were used in both the singles and doubles which allowed most players at least three matches. Ten schools participated this year including host USF, University of Central Florida (UCF), University of Florida (UF), Florida A&M University (FAMU), Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU), Florida International University (FIU), Stetson University (Stet), Bethune-Cookman University BCU), University of North Florida (UNF) and Florida Atlantic University (FAU).

YTF Chairperson, J Webb Horton and Tournament Director Lyn Bruner held a very successful event. Bedford Foundation Trustee, Ron Fick a former Gator Tennis player, was on hand for the festivities along with YTF President, Ed Jagger.

Play was conducted in two flights of singles and doubles. Results were as follows:

2019 Bedford Cup Women's Event - October 4-6, 2019

Ft. Myers, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) women's tennis team hosted the 2019 Bedford Cup October 4- 6, 2019 at the FGCU Tennis Complex. The Eagles hosted seven of the Division I tennis teams in the state of Florida, including Florida International (FIU), North Florida (UNF), South Florida (USF), Florida Atlantic (FAU), Central Florida (UCF), Stetson (STE), and Florida (UF).

2012 Bedford Cup Women's Event

UM NETTERS CAPTURE BOTH TITLES AT INAUGURAL BEDFORD CUP EVENT

Kelsey Laureneta from the University of Miami defeated unseeded Amy Sargeant of Florida State University 6-1, 6-4 to capture the singles title at the Inaugural State of Florida Division I Women’s Collegiate Championships, held from November 2-4 on the campus of the University of South Florida. In so doing, she took home the Bedford Cup and will be the first to have her name inscribed on the magnificent Cup, named after Edward T. Bedford, whose foundation donated the money to the Youth Tennis Foundation, which created, and sponsored, the event. Players from the University of Miami, Florida State, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida A & M, the University of Central Florida, the University of North Florida and the University of South Florida competed for the title.

The top seeded player, Ekatarina Vasenina, of USF, was upset by the eighth seed, Mia Vriens, of FSU in the quarters. Laureneta, the fifth seed, upset the fourth seed, Daneka Borthwick of Florida State in her quarter final match. She then beat Vriens in the semis to advance to the final round.

On the bottom half of the draw, Sergeant upset the sixth seed, Alonso, of USF in the round of 16, then upset the number four seed, Francesca Segarelli of FSU in the quarters, and then beat the second seeded player, Lilekita of UM in the semis to earn her spot in the finals.

In the doubles, the team of Brittany Dubins and Nichole Stracar of the University of Miami defeated Laureneta and Lina Lilakite, also of the University of Miami, to capture the title. Vasenina and Alonso, the second seeded team, were upset by the unseeded team of Lareneta and Lilekita in the semis. In the other semi final match, Dubins and Stracar, the fourth seeded team, defeated the unseeded team of Melanie Aguirre and Lorena Aviles of UNF, who upset the top seeded team of Borthwick and Segarelli in the quarters.

Mia Vriens of FSU was the recipient of the Sportsmanship Award, which was voted upon by the players, coaches and tournament referees. Irene Rehberger was the tournament director. The site of next year’s event has yet to be determined but UM, FSU, UNF, USF and UF have expressed an interest in hosting it and al l twelve Division I teams are expected to participate, as was the case with the men’s event held in September at the University of Florida.
